St. Petersburg Open 2020

The XXV ATP St. Petersburg Open 2020 international tennis tournament has come to an end in Saint Petersburg, with Gazprom Export LLC as its title sponsor. As is now traditional, singles and doubles matches were played on the courts of Sibur Arena Concert & Sports Complex from 12 to 18 October. This year was a landmark for the tournament as the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals), taking into account its high reputation, excellent arrangements, and the positive feedback from the athletes, decided to upgrade the competition category to ATP 500.

Despite the fact that not all athletes who planned to compete for the champion’s title were able to come to St. Petersburg due to the global epidemiological situation, the tournament has a strong line-up of players, among them Denis Shapovalov (No. 12 in the world ranking) and Milos Raonic (No. 21) of Canada, Stan Wawrinka (No. 18) of Switzerland, and Borna Coric (No. 27) of Croatia, as well as three leading Russian players – champion of the 2019 tournament Daniil Medvedev (No. 6), Andrey Rublev, who became world No. 10 after reaching the quarter-finals at Roland Garros, and Karen Khachanov (No. 17).

In the final doubles games Jurgen Melzer of Austria and Eduard Roger-Wasselin of France defeated Marcelo Demoliner of Brazil and Matve Middelkop of the Netherlands 6/2, 7/6 (4).

In the singles final, Andrey Rublev demonstrated incredible talent and will to win in defeating Borna Coric. This thrilling match lasted 1 hour 39 minutes and ended with the score 7/6(5), 6/4.

As per tradition, the tournament ended with a grand show and awards ceremony.
