St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy 2021

From March 13 to 21, the tennis courts of the Sibur Arena Concert and Sports Complex hosted the matches of the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy 2021, a Premier 500 International Tennis Tournament, with Gazprom Export LLC, as per tradition, acting as the title sponsor.

The tournament was held in Saint Petersburg for the sixth time, and over the years it has earned a well-deserved reputation in the global tennis community. This year, despite the calendar clash caused by the postponement of the Australia Open, the Saint Petersburg tournament managed to attract a pretty strong lineup, including France’s Kristina “Kiki” Mladenovic, the winner of the 2017 tournament, Latvia’s Anastasia Sevastova and Elena Ostapenko, the Czech Republic’s Kateřina Siniaková and Kristýna Plíšková, Romania’s Sorana Cîrstea, Kazakhstan’s Zarina Diyas, and Spain’s Paula Badosa, as well as top Russian players Margarita Gasparyan, Daria Kasatkina, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Veronica Kudermetova, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and others.

The tournament can safely be described as a triumph for the Russians. Throughout the whole week, Russian players showed outstanding performance, easily overcoming their opponents. As a result, it was two Russians – Margarita Gasparyan and Darya Kasatkina – who ended competing for the championship title. During the second set, with the score at 6:3, 2:1, Margarita Gasparyan had to bow out of the match after sustaining a back injury, and Darya Kasatkina was named the champion of the tournament. For the 23-year-old athlete, this trophy is the fourth in her career. In the final match of the doubles tournament, Ukraine’s Nadya Kichenok and Romania’s Raluca Olaru won a very close game against the US’s Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria. The match lasted 1 hour 22 minutes and ended with a score of 2:6, 6:3, 10:8.
