Gazprom Group started purchasing natural gas from Kazakhstan in 2003. In 2019, the company purchased 11.5 bcm of Kazakh gas, including 264 mcm for the further delivery to the North of Kyrgyzstan.

Due to specific features of gas transmission system in Kazakhstan, swap (exchange) operations are used extensively in gas trading with this country. Thus, Gazprom Export and its subsidiary Gazprom Schweiz AG not only purchase the Kazakh gas, but also supply gas from Russia and Uzbekistan to Kazakhstan's Aktobe and Kostanay regions, as well as to consumers in the southern regions of Kazakhstan.

In 2019, 2.7 bcm of Uzbek gas and 5.1 bcm of the Russian gas has been delivered to Kazakhstan.
