Gas purchases from Uzbekistan started in 2003. The volumes and the terms of supply were regulated by the Agreement on strategic cooperation in the gas sector between PJSC Gazprom and National Holding Company Uzbekneftegaz, signed on 17 December 2002.

In 2019, Gazprom Export and its subsidiaries purchased a total of 7.6 bcm of gas, including purchases of 2.7 bcm for the further supply to consumers in the southern regions of Kazakhstan as a part of swap operations and for the supply of 36 mcm of gas to the South of Kyrgyzstan.
