Greenhouse Gas Emissions Significantly Decreased in the EU in 2019

Greenhouse gas emissions in the EU’s industrial and power generation sectors decreased significantly in 2019. This follows from a communique published by the European Commission. “Emissions of greenhouse gases from all operators covered by the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) in 2019 reduced overall by 8.7% compared to 2018 levels”, says the report.

The most significant reduction, which amounted to 15%, was marked in the power generation sector. The European Commission noted that this decrease was the result of a switch from coal to renewable energy sources and natural gas.

The Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) is one of the key instruments of the EU’s climate change policy.
